The Labour Party: a hitman for a candidate

Published: August 30, 2011 at 4:48pm

Edgar Bonnici Cachia, who was a candidate for the Labour Party on the first district in the 1981 general election, was a co-conspirator in the Gaddafi-regime-sponsored attempted assassination of Abdul Hamid Bakkush on 16 November 1984.

Bakkush was prime minister under King Idris.

“This incident proves that Khadafy lost his qualification as a responsible man and head of state,” said Bakoush, Libya’s last prime minister before Khadafy overthrew King Idris in 1969. “He is an international criminal, and I call on all countries and governments of the world to take a stand towards him.”

Rushdi identified those arrested as Anthony William Gill, 48, and godfrey Chiner, 47, both of Lond; and Romero Nicholas Chakambari, 42, and Edgar Bonic Cacia, age unknown, both of Malta.

He said four were recruited by Ali Nejm, Libya’s ambassador to Malta. They were promised US$250,000 to arrange the assassination and were told they could hire Egyptian collaborators – who turned out to be Egyptian undercover officers – for US$150,000 to do the actual killing.

    • Grezz says:

Chakambari, being “of Malta”, must be a “Schembri”. What are the chances that “Godfrey Chiner” of London is a Godfrey Cini “Malti ta’ Londra”? Godfrey was, after all, a popular name amongst Maltese some four decades ago or more.

      Maybe somebody could enlighten me.

I had suspected this but wasn’t sure because as a candidate he used to be known as Edgar P. Bonnici Cachia. Incidentally he was also in prison for fraud.

For crying out loud, the whole world knows of the intimate relationship the MLP, as distinct from PL of course, had with Gaddafi.

But for Joseph Muscat this is all a ploy by the PN to discredit his party.

Same as with the atrocities during the Golden Years – the work of agents provocateurs.

If memory serves, Mr. Bonnici Cachia was arraigned in connection with alleged criminal behaviour related to the Bakoush affair, and was acquitted.

No longer listed on the electoral register.

He dropped out before April 2011.

He however has a Linkedin profile listing him as a Director & Owner of Bonnici Cachia Holdings Ltd.

This company is niot listed with the Registrar of Companies. The address he gives for this business is his last official home address and claims to employ over 100 and has a turnover of over USD10m – wishful thinking.

His wife Rita stopped appearing before April 2007.

All the above is information in the public domain.

Careful. There are probably at least 2 persons with that name and some posters could be confusing the former MLP candidate who was allegedly embroiled in the Bakoush affair with another person who is totally extraneous to these matters.

    • John Schembri says:

Ask yourself one question: “How would one behave if he’s threatened with his life or the life of his dear ones here or in Libya?”
We learned that in his embassy he had/has some really bad characters.

      • La Redoute says:

That’s the very question he asked the protestors who had gathered outside the embassy for days. “I have family members in Libya”, he said.

        Their reply? “So do we.”
