Who are John Dalli’s lawyers?

Published: October 23, 2012 at 3:22pm

He keeps referring to them, without telling us who they are. In situations like this, it is normal practice for the firm (which should be reputable and hopefully is) to out in the public domain from the start, even making statements on their client’s behalf.

He should also tell us the identity of the young lawyer (a woman) who at his request went to meet him by the swimming-pool of a Gozo hotel, where he was holidaying with his family, to enquire about snus (“I gave her the information” – my, he had it with him on holiday by the pool).

Nice headline, don’t you think?

EU HEALTH COMMISSIONER IN SECRET POOLSIDE SNUS MEETING ON HOLIDAY ISLE

I hope to goodness he wasn’t wearing his trunks and one of those hats which men of a certain age seem to like.

Anyway, the point is that we need to know who his lawyers are, and we need to know, in particular, who that young woman lawyer is, who met him by the pool, because there is a reasonable suspicion that they are all part of the same firm.

    Oh please do tell us…

    Let the speculation begin.

    Baxxter you go first.

  3. maryanne says:

Well, yesterday he certainly spoke Franco Debono’s same language:

If there is NO evidence of illegality, there is NO circumstantial evidence pointing to an inexistent illegality

[Daphne – I have no idea who they are. If I knew, then obviously I would have said who they are. Saying that somebody is Dalli’s lawyer does not constitute slander, and so I don’t need proof.]

  5. Ken il malti says:

I suspect that the Maoist and Jesuit coadjutor Jose Manuel Barroso brought this Dalli affair to a head at this time is to embarrass the PN when an election is so near. I’ll bet that Borgo Santo Spirito commie bugger is all rooting tooting for Joseph il Duce Muscat.

  6. Tinnat says:

A Gozitan young and female lawyer, perhaps?

“I hope to goodness he wasn’t wearing his trunks and one of those hats which men of a certain age seem to like.”

This brings to mind the character played by Eliot Gould in Ocean’s 11.

    • Mjones says:

Nowhere does it say Gozitan lawyer. It has been known for young female Maltese lawyers to cross over to Gozo at times..

  7. M. Borg says:

Got this funny feeling that the politically correct and precise english used by all posters are done by the same hand.

[Daphne – Posters are hung on walls, M. Borg. You’re wrong. This is where the better-educated come to play, having been squeezed out of other comments-boards by the army of the mad, the subliterate and the hopelessly ignorant and obnoxious. Comments-boards are like bars: when the chavs move in, everyone else moves out. And sometimes you keep a resident freak for entertainment. I have a few, but the favourite with my regulars seems to be Eddy Privitera.]

    • Daphne: If only you knew what the vast majority of those who read your despicable articles and comments, say about you, you wouldn’t put a foot out of your Bidnija abode ! But I’m sure you know that most refer to you as IS-SAHHARA TAL-BIDNIJA.

You’re so intelligent that you probably take it as a compliment !

      • Angus Black says:

If my memory serves me right, Eddy, you posted this same comment not too long ago.

You must be good at cutting and pasting, especially when, as usual, you run dry of any sensible comments. No new and improved slogans from Joseph, lately?

We can only surmise what the typical lil’elves’ comments would be and how many misspelled obscene words in both official languages they would contain, but there is not the slightest doubt what the vast majority of posters here think of you.

      • TROY says:

Now, now, Eddy, let’s not forget that you’re called ‘il-bazwi’.

Just keep on hanging them low.

      • Tal-misthija says:

Ed, dawk li jghidu dik l-espressoni huma nies bhalek. Lill dalli sa ftit snin ilu kontu tghidu li hu korrot imma llum sar ta’ gewwa, insejtu kemm kontu tghidu fuq is-super one fuq huh.

      • Neil Dent says:

Eddie – the vast majority? Have you run some kind of survey?

Or is it really just the bitter, Labour-blinkered ones with nothing better to do that you refer to? You know – the ones just like you?

    • WhoamI? says:

      that cock!

      • winwood says:

Angus, Privitera could never run dry of sensible comments, ghax mohhu min dejjem ta tigiega kien

    • ninnu says:

Daphne, i agree with you. Eddy is one of the best local entertainers……….veru fih buzzzzzzzzzz.

    • el bandido guapo says:

“…but the favourite with my regulars seems to be Eddy Privitera.”

By all means let him have his say, but he is only tedious, never entertaining. Stupidity makes for a poor spectacle.

    • john says:

I’d prefer kev to Privitera any day. At least he’s got some sort of a brain.

    • A Montebello says:

You just put into words exactly what I was thinking: that the will to participate in comments-boards has been squeezed out by the subliterate, ignorant and blinkered.

Eddy “il-Bazwi” Privitera is definitely one to retain however because he provides some light entertainment every now and then and manages to remind people like me why we could never support Labour.

He used to piss me off but now I just read his comments and smile and think “Ahh, there goes il-Bazwi with another blinkered comment”.

    • Grosvenor says:

      nope!

  8. jack says:

Perhaps the same lawyer that filed the judicial letter… oh wait… the legal letter

  9. Quite nice says:

Let’s give it a shot, shall we?

    Young + female

That rules out Franco Debono, then.

  10. Thaw des says:

I understood 2 meetings, 1 by a pool in Gozo and another 1 with a young Maltese lawyer, maybe by the same pool?? but on different dates .so unlikely.

  11. George Grech says:

I can organize a meeting with her.

My fee ? 60 Million Euros

  12. M says:

Did Dalli not use a Debono style of self-defence at one point when he referred to ‘the process of natural justice’ not running its course because he did not know why he was asked to resign and was not given an opportunity to defend himself?

  13. NikiB says:

Dalli mentioned in the Euro Parliament debate:

    http://www.europarl.europa.eu/ep-live/en/plenary/video?intervention=1350999337675

Go to 15:22:39 for the question about the future of the Tobacco Directive and to 15:41:23 for the reply (and comments about Dalli).

Judge for yourselves how true Dalli’s allegaitons are.

    • Tinnat says:

Very interesting choice of words. The Vice-Commissioner says here “it was quite clear that after the OLAF investigation and the discussion of the OLAF report between the President of the Commission and Comissioner (Dalli), it was clear that his position was untenable…”

So Dalli IS aware of the content of the report, but hasn’t been telling us that he isn’t?

  14. H.P. Baxxter says:

Sweden has made a forensic reconstruction of this poolside meeting. You can see the video here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOP-iGERukY

    Maybe this will convince Ciccio.

  15. yor/malta says:

The icing on the cake would be for Franco Debono to represent Mr Dalli . Then let the wailing begin .

  16. C Falzon says:

If Dalli has any lawyers then he is either not listening to them or they are Super One employees.

  17. D Gatt says:

Rough guess: Jose Herrera. He defends his brother Bastjan.

  18. Neil Dent says:

Why did Franco, during his attempt to regain some limelight and call yet another ‘urgent Dalligate debate’ in the House today, feel the need to say that he hadn’t spoken to Dalli in months?

  19. Grosvenor says:

Emmanuel Mallia would do anything for a case like this.

  20. E.Dimech says:

What’s wrong with a person having a holiday in Gozo with his family?

It’s funny how this has news value for this blog while PBO’s holidays on Zaren’s yacht and Tonio Fenech’s trip on a private jet have never been mentioned.

Selective journalism is no journalism. Oh wait, there aren’t any journalists in here.

[Daphne – Nothing is wrong with an EU Commissioner taking a holiday in Gozo, as long as he pays for it and doesn’t accept it as a gift. What’s wrong is an EU Commissioner setting up meetings at his hotel while on holiday there. This is what worried the European Commission and caused their objections, and rightly so.
