Posted by P Shaw – and no wonder Varist is even more embittered and wizened than he was before 2008. The nerdy ginger boy who used to do his bidding and drive him around (Varist doesn’t know how to drive) is now his great leader.
One other key reason that Muscat feels uncomfortable with students is that he never interacted with us when we were at University.
For example, I never saw him (or Simone Cini) inside the students’ house, cafeteria or canteen.
Probably he thought that we were not useful to him at the time or that chatting with fellow students was a waste of time.
I only remember both of them (Joseph Muscat and Simone CIni) hanging around Evarist Bartolo and driving Evarist around.

What is this about losers hanging around Varist?
In the seventies, it was Mary Darmanin (who later married Alfred Sant), Guzeppi Schembri (Bonaci), Dominic Fenech and someone called Fugi, if my memory is correct, who hung around Varist.
Don’t remember the rest though.
By Dominic Fenech, do you mean the university lecturer, nowadays a professor?
Is that William Chetcuti in the picture?
There was another Super One journalist driving Varist around: Joe Mifsud, especially when Joe was still a Communications student (the law degree came later).
At the time Michelle Tanti (now Muscat) was Sandro Mangion’s girlfriend and a Communications student as well, in the same group as Helena Dalli. I think it was the early 90s.
The perfect animal farm.
That’s it. I get the feeling that Joseph was never young.
He behaved like a 50-year-old man when he was still 20. He’ll be house-bound and a cranky old man by the time he’s 60.
You know, like the typical Maltese man (or woman) who feel they’re old and need everyone to take care of them once they’re in their sixties.
[Daphne – No, he’ll still be trying for a comeback, like all those sexagenarians in his party today: Edward Scicluna, Louis Grech, Alex Sceberras Trigona, Karmenu Vella, Marie Louise Coleiro…]
He will apply that counterfeit shoe polish to the crown of his head with a trowel when he is in his 60s.
Sandro Mangion…..hhhhmmm
