Here’s an important corruption question which Muscat must answer

Published: January 31, 2013 at 1:32pm

John Dalli with Labour deputy leaders Toni Abela and Anglu Farrugia at an event organised by Alex Sceberras Trigona to commemorate the Labour Party’s long relationship with Gaddafi’s Libya.

We were told originally that John Dalli was in Brussels when he unexpectedly fell ill and had to be taken to hospital there, making it ‘medically inadvisable’ for him to return to Malta and be prosecuted for now.

But new, conflicting information has since emerged, which makes it clear that he travelled to Brussels immediately after being interrogated by the police, specifically to receive treatment there.

Given that Brussels hospitals and clinics are on par with those in Malta, medical treatment alone cannot possibly be the real purpose of his trip to Brussels. That purpose would have been medical treatment (if at all) used as an excuse to elude or stave off prosecution.

The police in Malta can pay a quick visit to Mater Dei Hospital or St James Capua to see whether he really is so ill that he can’t face the court, but they’re not going to bother doing that with a Brussels hospital.

There’s more. My international worldwide network of spies (and this isn’t a joke) tells me that John Dalli isn’t even in hospital at all. He’s resting at his home there. Also, his ‘serious medical problems’ – and I wonder why the press never bothered to ask, unless it was misplaced reservations about privacy issues – are nothing but hypertension.

That certainly does not warrant travelling to Brussels for treatment, and it doesn’t mean you can’t get on a plane, or face prosecution.

The last we heard officially, in the newspapers, is that the police will not be issuing a European arrest warrant for him because they think there’s no call for that, given that he plans to return.

But how can they be so sure that he plans to return?

They said that they have received medical certificates telling them that Dalli will not be fit to travel until at least the end of February.

You can see where this is going, can’t you. Dalli is clearly planning to stay in Brussels and out of reach of the Malta police until his mate Joseph Muscat – the first person he called to say that he’d been sacked as EU Commissioner – is prime minister on 10 March.

Then he’ll try to evade justice completely by calling in all those favours he’s owed by Muscat and the Labour Party for the help he gave them with his endless performances on Super One and worse.

This is what Muscat needs to tell us: is he going to let his friend and associate John Dalli get away with it?

Who says he has to fly back?

    He can be driven back.

  2. Toyger says:

If hypertension prohibits one from getting on a plane, then half the Maltese population wouldn’t be able to go on holiday.

  3. bystander says:

    Well it’s a no brainer.

The police have said Dalli will be arraigned upon his return.

So if he isn’t then we know Muscat must have intervened.

  4. Candida says:

Yeah perfect that’s the first part of the John Dalli game

  5. silvio says:

    Get away with what?
    Nothing has been proven yet.
Why all this rush for his head?

I hope it s not the intention to use this episode to divert our attention from the recent Oil scandal which seems to have some bigshots involved.

How come no fuss was made when one of the persons being questioned was rushed to hospital and on the other hand all these insinuations because Dalli had to be taken for treatment?

    • Neil Dent says:

Silvio – the ‘oil scandal’ investigations are ongoing. Mr. Tabone’s visit to the hospital has not held it up in fact it has been given top priority by the prosecution team.

Then to the contrary, Mr. Dalli flying (fleeing?) to Brussels for treatment, and subsequently being advised not to fly, HAS held up the Snus/Match case.

Let’s just say, there’s a teeny-weeny chance that the details provided by Daphne here are RIGHT on the button, as difficult for you as that may be, OK? With hat in mind, wouldn’t you agree that hypertension is:

      1) Definitely not a condition that requires specialist treatment abroad, and,

      2) Definitely not a condition that would prevent him from flying back to Malta for some two months or more.

      • silvio says:

You might be underestimating the consequences related to Hypertension, which could lead to stroke or heart attack, if not properly taken care of.
What you say that Dalli is “Fleeing to Brussels” makes no sense. Who would flee to the same country that was the place where all this insinuations originated, for reasons up to now remain unknown?.

Why should anybody be hounded, like a criminal, just because someone might have a “Teeny-weeny chance” that the details are Right.

What has held up the Snus case is not Dalli having to go to Brussels, but the reluctancy of the local police and the A.G. to have the Olaf report presented in court.

In closing, I never said or insinuated that the fact that Mr.Tabone had to be taken to hospital was in any way intended to delay the investigation of the Oil scandal, what I meant was that pressure put on anybody, especially on persons who’s integrity is unquestioned, can have a lot of adverse consequences on one’s health.

You know silvio, I feel like quoting the Soviet in Rocky IV: If he dies, he dies.

      • Lestrade says:

Silvio : I think the verdict could lead to stroke or heart attack. Why is he not brought back to Malta on a Medevac plane and arraigned. Or would he send a “sickie” from Portomaso?

    The REAL clique emerges.

  8. canon says:

I tell you that if Gaddafi were still alive Dalli would have preferred medical treatment in Libya.

  9. Jozef says:

    Our own Bettino Craxi.

  10. pazzo says:

ah how easy when you join the dots.

  11. Riya says:

John Dalli knew beforehand that if he is caught in any corruption he has no way out with the PN, so he paved the way with Labour so that he will be covered if the worst has to come. This was his only way out and most probably that is the reason why he went on One TV to accomodate the Labour Party to cover his back.

  12. Grezz says:

Very well said, and good observation too.

  13. anthony says:

If the Belgian medical establishment is unable to get a bad hypertensive fit for air travel within a week then Dalli would be well-advised to seek further treatment in Tripoli or in Hammamet like Bettino.

  14. Ghoxrin Punt says:

So much for transparency. Muscat remains a joke.

    “Meta jkun il-waqt nghidlek.”

X’inhi? Jghidli issa, qabel ma nibda nhallaslu il-paga.

  15. dissident says:

Is sens ta’ stil kien parti minn xi deal mal-Libya wkoll?

  16. old-timer says:

This Dalli case is hard proof that the PN especially Gonzi, has always been seeking the elimination of corruption. With facts not just words.
