What is the Medical Council’s view of a dentist being drunk and disorderly in public?

Published: March 17, 2013 at 12:31pm

Dentists fall under the jurisdiction of the Medical Council of Malta. It’s time for us to remember that Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando is not only chairman of the Malta Council of Science and Technology.

There is another reason why he should not be drunk and disorderly in a public place.

He is a medical professional, a dentist.

Dentists have to be in full control of their faculties when working on the mouths of patients.

And this is quite apart from the fact that the sight of a dentist drunk and shouting abuse while standing on bar-counter among a mob brings the profession into grievous disrepute.

As Chairman of the MCST, is he regulated by a Code of Ethics for public officials?

Is there a public sector entity that can look into this case of gross misconduct in a public place?

Will the Head of Civil Service, or Chief of Staff, ask for his resignation, even if by mistake?

I believe the Medical Council has to receive a letter of complaint; and will not start an investigation itself. I do not agree, but apparently so it is.

He reminds me of myself when VALLETTA FC win the Championship, but then again I’m neither a dentist nor chairman of a state organisation.

The Medical Council will only act if there is an official complaint from the public or from one of its members.

  11. Min Jaf says:

The Medical Council is probably just about as effective in regard to the actions and improper behaviour of its members as is the Press Club in regard to its journalist members and also as is the Commission of the Administration of Justice regarding misbehaviour on the part of members of the judiciary.

You’re are so right. Nothing was heard from the Medical Council after Joanna Gonzi spat venom against her fellow Councillors even though the Hon. George Vella stated he would report it.

Had he perhaps discovered she was Camilleri before she was married?

Some say Michael Camilleri, chairman of Bulk Buying in Labour times, is her father but they could be wrong.

      Where are the investigative reporters?

Just picture having a first appointment with a dentist suffering from the mother of all hangovers.
