With university lecturers like this one…
Ivan Paul Grixti, whose brother Alfred has just been appointed chairman of the Foundation for Social Welfare Services (without an open call for applications or interviews), is a lecturer at the University of Malta’s Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy. He teaches accountancy.
He is also a candidate in this year’s European Parliament elections, on the Labour Party ticket.
But beyond that, he is one of those insufferable teachers/lecturers who aims for popularity with his students by acting as though he is one of them.
I couldn’t stand that kind of behaviour even when I was a student. It was so uncool. But the Muzew-and-minestra dorks and villagers always seemed to love it and think of it as the height of ‘cool’ (it’s the opposite of that) and from the looks of it here in this video, which is on public view on Facebook, they still do.
There’s a comment by Grixti in which he thanks his students for their admiration and addresses them as “guys and dolls”. I see that the terminology used by the hero-leaders of Muzew-and-minestra (do they still wear matted and bobbled fleeces?) students hasn’t changed at all since the early 1980s.
‘Guys and dolls’: when freaky ‘teen leaders’ said that in 1981 at St Aloysius College, when it was already around 15 years out of date, I froze in contempt, made my excuses and left before they brought the guitars out and began singing Kumbaya. I didn’t want to be anywhere near people who said ‘guys and dolls’. I can’t believe Ivan Grixti is still saying it in 2014.

You’ve missed quite an important detail there. That silly gelled-hair dork trying to lift Grixti up is Schembri something, head of the Parliamentary Accounts Committee, the one who likes to pose for selfies without wearing a t-shirt. What he would do had he been a good-looking guy is beyond anyone’s imagination.

I stand to be corrected but the young student with the legs of a canary lifting Grixti is none other than, drum roll… Silvio ‘hamest iħluq’ Schembri! Birds of a feather.
If this totalitarian poseur were genuinely committed to liberalism, next would be legalisation of abortion.

He is also boasting that he became a friend of his students. Is it becoming a trend for teachers to become friendly with their students. Have we not had enough of ugly experiences.
I would not like to be in his class unless I am guaranteed I am in his good books. I do not mean the accounts ledgers here.
Ivan Grixti has not changed one bit since 20 odd years ago when I first met him through a common acquaintance.
At the time he did not lecture in accountancy but was employed by Malta University Services.
Not your most technical person, with a very evident desire to be popular and yes, he tried hard to look and sound like a cool guy.
To be honest he was nothing more than a boring dork and my impression of him was that he was also a jerk.

Oh…but that he is.
He was also full of it during Sant’s government back in 1997 when I first got to know him, discussing politics on campus.
It is not that as students we did not discuss politics amongst ourselves, but it is so very different when a university employee and aspiring lecturer does so.
None of this is surprising to those who knew him at a distance, let alone those who knew him better.
May I also add that to Ivan Grixti, his election as MEP is a foregone conclusion and he is very matter of fact about it.
I am just not sure whether this is delusion or arrogance on his part. Probably both.

Since when do university lecturers, or teachers for that matter, become friends?

I feel that certain boundaries should never be crossed and one’s role should not be forgotten, at least for the sake of professionalism.
This reminds me of the “sufan iż-ż***” remark when referring to one of the Bulgarian BA Tourism students who habitually used to sit in the front row.
Ivan was a great lecturer. If only we’ve had more lecturers like him! I do not know what’s all the fuss about – he is DOWN TO EARTH. That’s what we need and not some ‘expert’ MEP whom you cannot access
He just shouldn’t have booze with students or have them as Facebook friends. It’s so wrong.
It was pathetic when a teacher or lecturer would say that he/ she would like to be our friend. They used to seem so eager for us to like them, and sure enough there would be some students who would be delighted at this approach.
Needless to say, I was never one of these teachers’ favourites and they were never mine.
As a matter of fact he is not a lecturer but an assistant lecture, meaning he has no doctorate.
I am informed that he is in the final stages of his PhD, which took him around ten years to complete.
I was wondering whatever happened to that.
Another comment about this post is related to the image given to lecturers at university of Malta. By far, Mr Grixti is not representative of the average lecturer at the university.
