Mrs Muscat marks Special Olympics commemorative plate with “The Spouse of the Prime Minister”

Published: October 28, 2014 at 7:15pm

This is a screen grab from a Labour Party TV news bulletin item about mart il-Prim Ministru Joseph Muscat, Is-Sinjura Michelle Muscatmeeting the Special Olympics team.

It was not about the Special Olympics team or even about the Marigold Foundation, the charity organisation set up by Bank of Valletta to allow Mrs Muscat to get her name in the news as often as possible, with the side benefit of raising money for good causes.

It was about how Mrs Muscat told them prosit and gave them a plate to mark the occasion. The entire plate is emblazoned with this large inscription:

To commemorate the grand performance of Special Olympics Malta during the Special Olympics Summer Games 2014 in Belgium

With the full support and best wishes of The Spouse of the Prime Minister and Honorary President of Special Olympics Malta Mrs Michelle Muscat

So now we have a new constitutional role: The (capital T, please) Spouse (capital S, please) of the Prime Minister.

They even want to be the ones who draft a new protocol and people will remember them as the ones who had been the first to swim against the currents. Qisna il-Korea, bid-dahka u t-tislima wkoll.

Mrs Muscat and The Spouse of Mrs Muscat: a couple of bums. Their only aim is to make as much of it as they can for themselves.

  4. pablo says:

They left nothing to chance. I suppose she is now to be addressed as “Mrs Prime Minister” and Joey becomes “the Spouse of Mrs Prime Minister”. Crazy people doing crazy things.

  5. Josette says:

Eh, mela. Ma kontux tafu? Michelle hi l-mara tal-Prim Ministru.

No wonder we rank so low in issues relating to gender equality. Even our self-styled “first lady” sees herself as just an extension of her husband.

And her husband just doesn’t see her at all.

And rest assured that after The Spouse’s spouse leaves office, she will be known for the rest of her days as Mart L-Ex Prim Ministru Joseph Muscat, Is-Sinjura Michelle Muscat.

Or better still, Mart Il-Prim Ministru Emeritus Joseph Muscat, Is-Sinjura etc etc.

    T.S.P.M.

It could stand for “Tikxef S..m il-Po.t Muscat”

    Any alternative suggestions, please?

  7. Wink says:

Just wondering, The Spouse can be divorced, would The Nephew, The Uncle etc have a more prominent role than the current Spouse?

  8. U Le! says:

The plate can double up as a frisbee for the Special Olympics.

The Spouse of the Prime Minister…..Sounds like a new ministry

  10. Comment says:

It has always been her intention to leave her name marked everywhere she went. That is why she wanted to be in power at all costs.

  11. Claire says:

Thanks to the fact that Malta has not got a first lady since we have a lady president, she is putting herself in all lime lights and considering herself as a first lady.

This was the aim of having a lady president in Malta, so there would be no other wife in the lime light.
