I have been informed by sources who have actually seen the weapon that the President’s chauffeur is prison guard No. 11, Mark Spiteri, who is armed with a 9mm automatic or semi-automatic weapon which he carries beneath his jacket.

Mr Spiteri is not a member of the police force and in no circumstances would he be permitted to carry a weapon routinely.

Is this all new? Not too sure. It’s the usual jungle.

  2. Mim says:

There are laws and then there are the laws for others, typical.

What was also the be expected is that the Prime Minister, who refused to let the Leader of the Opposition know about the deals he was making with the Chinese, Henley & partners, Shiv Nair and all the others, is accusing Dr Simon Busuttil of not shouldering responsibility in this case because Dr. Busuttil refuses to clean up the mess Mallia and the Act. Commissioner (both specifically chosen by Muscat) have made.

Again, Joseph Muscat the ‘mhux jien’ champion.

Is Madame president the president of Malta or the USA? Do we need armed drivers for heaven’s sake? Does Madame President condone law breaking? If she has any idea of Maltese law that is. Its all crap from the very top.

  4. caflanga says:

And yet there will be no weapons allowed in Parliament as from tomorrow.

In the meantime, police officers can fire away at civilians driving by and the Head of State is protected by armed officers. Shhhhh…. you’re not meant to see the connection because Big Brother with the Big Belly is saying there aren’t any two weights and two measures.

Maybe it’s because he’s taking his lessons in Ceaușescu from Codruta and her lapdancing girlfriends.

  5. P Bonnici says:

This is not a danger to the general public but to the president herself, having someone next to her carrying a firearm who is untrained.

As a private citizen who was but a young child in the early 80s I learned to grow up in fear and caution as to what to do or say and was constantly aware of political tension.

That changed with the change of government and I, together with many people my age subsequently shoved those tensions to the dark areas of our memories.

Lately those tensions have started resurfacing again, and Malta does not seem to be such a safe place to live in anymore – not with our pompous heads of state walking around with armed hotheaded men, and especially knowing that these heads of state are currently engaged in activities where children are involved.

  11. H.P. Baxxter says:

Automatic? There are very few 9mm automatic weapons you could conceal under a jacket. It would have to be something like a CZ75 Automatic.

Since Manuel Mallia came to power, the Police Corps and Armed Forces have been lavished with a worrying quantity of shiny new weapons, and they make it a point to carry them whenever they can.

This is not your friendly Bobby, but the “ara titniffes, a*****a f**** o*****k SWAT-type uniformed thug that we seem to regard as normal.

And expensive weapons too. Like the MPX, which was only revealed to the world earlier this year, and which is already carried by Police Corps members on such mundane patrols as the Airport.

They tell us it’s for CHOGM 2015 and such. Or because of the Libyan war etc. But if push came to shove, we all know who they’d fire their weapons on. Not your Libyan billionaire, certainly.

  12. Mortal Danger says:

Last Friday, President Maria Goretti Preca paid a visit to a charity event at the Dragonara Palace Hotel, attended almost entirely by women and children.

Yet she was swarming with protection officers. Protection from what, exactly?

The worse that could have happened was someone treading on her toes in a display of exuberance, since the event was a Zumba masterclass in aid of L-Istrina.

Looking back now, the only ones needing protection were probably those attending the event in good faith. If her driver carries a weapon, these undesirables most certainly do as well.

Tomorrow, Simon Busuttil will be delivering his reply to the budget speech. The feeling of deja vu is overwhelming.

  13. etil says:

Some Presidents overseas are worthy of that name as they do sometimes bring up certain issues and say outright that they do not condone such and such an attitude.

With due respect, our President is only interested in charities, fun runs, etc.

She does not seem to care much about what is going on at the top echelons of government.

  14. sync82 says:

Actually she’s got another two protection officers and they carry a weapon too. I’ve seen them with her at Mater Dei Hospital around two weeks ago and although they were wearing a suit their side arm showed well.

  15. NGT says:

The only “first lady” who could have justifiably requested armed protection was Mary Fenech Adami after she was attacked by the same species of people who seem to think that an armed chauffeur is a status symbol. Armed guards, SUVs, tinted windows… they watch way too much telly.

  16. Natalie Mallett says:

The fact that these people need armed guards only goes to show that they are scared of being targetted by certain people.

    I ask why and who?

They must know a lot more than they are revealing to the general public.

There is no such thing as money for nothing and if they are breaking promises and pre election deals than no wonder they are shite scared.

  17. observer says:

In the instances shown in the second and third photos, I would have suggested a simple toy – a water pistol loaded with the smelliest of liquids (always readily available if one cares to save some when necessity calls).

It’s not difficult to use – a six-year old could aim it perfectly – and an abundant squirt at the President’s feigned admirers would just serve the right deserts.

  18. leli says:

No wonder – they are surrounded by criminals.

  19. Denis says:

They seem to be all too paranoid, unless there is a very real problem we don’t know about.

  20. Oooooops says:

If only John F. Kennedy had Mallia’s driver behind the wheel, he might still be alive today.

    Oh well.

  21. michael seychell says:

It seems that the President does not mind being greeted and kissed by a criminal.

  22. Queen's English says:

We were expecting corruption, incompetence and vindictive acts from Labour. But this! We will soon be terrified of the government because we are starting to feel physically threatened.
