Manuel Mallia’s crime cover-up hits the headlines : in, of course, The Scotsman

Published: November 21, 2014 at 6:15pm

Manuel Malli’s driver shoot-out and crime cover-up have hit the headlines in (it goes without saying) The Scotsman, Scotland’s national newspaper.

Our government is lucky that the headline writer has him down as an ordinary MP, when it is clear in the story that he is a minister of state.

    Here we go.

  4. Trabokk says:

Shame on you, Mr Minister. You and the government have again managed to drag Malta’s name through the mud for the second time in just 20 months.

One of your election promises has for sure been fulfilled – i.e. WE WILL BRING MALTA NUMBER ONE IN EU, but your PL forgot to tell us that we are number one from the bottom of the list.

  5. Peritocracy says:

Mr Morrison Smith should start a couple of libel cases on the hit-and-run business before it gets out of control.

  6. Wilson says:

There is only one thing left now: sit back and laugh.

    • anthony says:

      Laugh at what?

At seeing your country being vilified internationally because of a government that is not fit for purpose.

Laugh because your fellow Maltese have decided to entrust the running of your homeland to a bunch of criminal, corrupt clowns.

      This is no laughing matter.

      On the contrary.

      • H.P. Baxxter says:

Vilified = unjustly abused. This isn’t vilification, but fair criticism. And very mild and implicit at that.

[Daphne – Hey there. Welcome back.]

  7. Alexander Ball says:

I am starting a charity in Scotland. We are asking for Labour sympathisers to volunteer a few days of their time to be shot at by Mallia’s new driver.

All sponsorship monies will be fully accounted for.

  8. eve says:

It is quite obvious that it was a failed attempt at a cover-up. It is so obvious.

  9. Mim says:

Quick, quick Prime Minister Muscat, go teach the Scots what a cover up really is, and don’t forget to impress them with your ‘wot de hekk’ if they are not as gullible as the Maltese.

  10. Gladio says:

This afternoon round 13.30, one could hear a volley of shots coming from the direction of the Police Corps shooting range.

Could it be that Minister Bang Bang instructed the Acting Police Commissioner to order shooting practice for police officers in order to aim better when shooting in order to eliminate all incriminating evidence.

  12. PWG says:

I fear a backroom deal engineered by the wily minister. Hope the Scot is a true braveheart.

    • Tabatha White says:

Had the same thought. I wonder if Manwel Mallia was always his lawyer, whether it was since 2011 or before that too.

  13. ciccio says:

    Reminds me of McGills.

This government has given Malta and the Maltese a horrible name in Scotland this year.

  14. the box says:

So a driver now called a protection officer

  15. Former police officer says:

Whether it was a ‘cover-up’ or ‘a mistake that was corrected’ is arguable to the point of nausea. What is clear is that the minister’s first public utterances were in praise of his driver. And all that followed was directly or indirectly in his defence.

This is a no-no. This shows he had not fathomed the gravity of the matter and was intent on giving his driver the support he needed.

The PM did not help much by telling us the following day how ‘angered and disgusted’ the minister was. On the contrary, this only served to shine a brighter light on what the minister had actually said a day earlier.

This is one circle you cannot sqaure.

It’s good that these shenanigans have been condemned by the majority. This is not the USA, where police thugs are allowed to run loose, shooting and beating whoever they deem disrespectful.

This nation still believes that the police are here to serve and protect.

Let us not create a mini police state where armed demi-gods rule the streets with the consent and protection of our elected representatives. This is how it starts – a minister defending an empowered thug with ego issues. And to think that it would have been brushed aside had everyone remained silent!

It is worth keeping in mind that Malta already has a high police-to-citizen ratio. Moreover, we’ve imported several tyrannical laws from our mentors in the West – laws that are interpretable in diverse contexts, or that erase fundamental common law principles, such as the reversal of onus of proof, the ‘war on cash’, and the unleashing of pervasive, secret surveillance with the potential for political targetting.

Freedom is not lost in a day. Tyranny creeps up society’s spine gradually and unnoticeably. Armed thugs in uniform usually follow.

    • Rover says:

It won’t be long before we have a new Pietru Pawl Busuttil scenario. They have plenty of experience.

    • Tabatha White says:

“Moreover, we’ve imported several tyrannical laws from our mentors in the West – laws that are interpretable in diverse contexts, or that erase fundamental common law principles, such as the reversal of onus of proof, the ‘war on cash’, and the unleashing of pervasive, secret surveillance with the potential for political targetting. ”

      Too true.

  16. Osservatore says:

Suddenly, Konrad Mizzi’s banging pales into silence following those three loud bangs.

Actually, I am starting to wonder if each daily political mishap is just an attempt to distract us from that of the previous day, thus keeping us in a state of continuous political distraction. Let’s face it, ever since March 2013 its been one crisis after the other.

PERSONAL NOTE – Please bring back the next and previous article links. It makes going through a couple days worth of articles so much easier when one needs to catch up. It was a really practical feature! Thanks.

  17. Philip says:

Former Police Officer, unfortunately, the Prime Minister leads by example – as he did with Cyrus Engerer. What’s good for the goose is good for the other goose and for the frog.

  18. rjc says:

There is something that we seem to have missed so far. We will probably never know what happened during the meeting between the British High Commissioner and the Prime Minister, but it was after that meeting that Joseph Muscat came out saying that he is angry and disgusted.
