Malta’s ambassador to Rome has one too

Hard to believe, but Malta’s ambassador to Rome, Vanessa Frazier, now has one of THOSE bags too. She’s usually well put together, so maybe she’s just being smart in the other meaning of the word.

You know how it used to be in the 18th century: the queen puts a model ship in her powdered wig, and all the courtiers who wish to find more favour do the same while muttering “this damned galleon” every morning at their toilette.

With or without a name, the bag is unattractive, but what I find most mystifying is this: why would a grown woman want something with her name on it?

The last time I wanted to wear something with my name on it, I was nine years old and it was a T-shirt. By the time silver chokers with your name on them came into fashion, I was 13 and already I remember thinking ‘why would I want to wear my name around my neck?’

I can understand that a girl of six would want a bag with her name on it, but women in their 40s? The wife – apologies, spouse – of the prime minister? An ambassador of a European Union member state?

It’s all so very Eastenders, and not in a good way.
