Silvio Scerri, the lighting-business magnate who says that he gave up his business to become Police and Army Minister Manuel Mallia’s ‘chief of staff’, and who lost his position when Mallia lost his last December, is pushing to be made head of security and logistics for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in October.

The person who originally held that post – and who was unfit for purpose for other reasons – resigned recently because he couldn’t cope with Phyllis Muscat’s incompetence. Her communications aide Alessandra Pace – the one heard off-camera in that famous interview in The Sunday Times, telling her boss “Come on, you know this – we went through it all yesterday” – resigned at the same time.

That person is Kurt Cini, a first cousin to Simone Cini of Super One and a businessman who is heavily involved in the construction industry. There is no reason on earth why he should have been considered for the post of head of security/logistics or why he would have wanted it.

Now Silvio Scerri is pushing to replace him. Is he sniffing opportunities to make money on the side or does he just want the muscle-flexing power?

He should stick to lighting conferences and entertainment shows.
