Despite being named on the Shanghai list of consuls as being Malta’s consul in that city, the health and energy minister’s estranged wife is still being paid her hefty salary and allowances out of the budget made available to Malta Enterprise for its own projects.

She is not being paid by the Foreign Ministry, which means that she is not a consul despite being named as the contact person for the consulate.

I’m told that Mario Vella, Malta Enterprise chief, gets really angry every time her name is mentioned. Apparently he thinks she’s eating up large amounts of Malta Enterprise money for doing nothing. Well, just like him then.

Except that his envoy is probably being paid a whole lot more than he, her boss, is. What can I say? He’s the one who signed the contract. His name is right there on it. If he objected to the waste of funds, had his arm twisted or thought the move corrupt, he shouldn’t have gone along with it. Now that he’s gone along with it, it’s pointless getting cross and he’s just as bad as they are.
