Government slashes unemployment figure by putting 600 long-term unemployed on the state payroll

The Sunday Times reports today that the government has created a special vehicle to mop up long-term unemployed people by putting them on the state payroll, cutting the unemployment figure by 600 in just months.

Those 600 people have now become a full-salaried expense for the taxpayer until they retire, but the government doesn’t care about this because it is now able to boast about slashing unemployment, despite having burdened the public sector payroll so badly and for so long.
