Joseph Grech Attard,

You really need to get real. All you need to do is listen to Lawrence Gonzi's speeches, full of hope and opportunity for all. For Gonzi anyone can make it, Labour, Nationalist or Green. Nobody is held back. Gonzi does not believe in a social divide.

Look at Labour. All their speeches are tinged with references to an imaginary social divide, how labourites receive unequal opportunities and are an oppressed segment of the population.

But I'm not surprised. With a leader who stated that Malta is MAKKU what else do you expect but a party with a very low level of self esteem and belief in the population of this country.

Joseph Grech-Attard - read my Thursday post about the way the Labour Party is still shoring up class hatred in 2008, and this is precisely what is holding it back. Your use of the word 'elite' to describe the anything-but-elite Nationalist Party is yet another example of the outdated thinking that permeates Labour, which is still riddled with shoulder-chips.

My dears gonziPN is years away. We MLP supporters were called Mintoffjani from the 50's till the 80's, and in a degrading manner by the elite (sic) PN. Now we are MLP not Santjani. We have matured, politically of course. On the other hand, always using the same scales, PN has degraded itslef to gonziPN. Gonzi first, PN after. Why is that I wonder?!! What will happen if, God forbid, Gonzi disappears during a legislation?

Daphne,

Excellent article! You hit the nail on the head with the following sentence:

"Like the less enlightened of its supporters, achieving the seat of government is an end in itself, rather than the means to the end of making Malta a better place to live."

As you rightly say, the best thing for Labour is for them to lose this election, get rid of Sant and the old guard who still believe in the politics of the 70's. Then they can re-organise and put up a real, decent alternative to the PN. Only then can Malta not have to go through the anxieties it now goes through in a general election. A re-organised MLP with clear vision and serious, reasoned economic, social and educational programmes would ensure that Malta would benefit no matter which party gets elected, unlike now when a Labour Government could take Malta back (way back) to 'square one.' A new beginning indeed.
