Call me ignorant, but what is this “Elves” reference?

[Daphne – Bit of a long story. Around a year ago, I noticed that many of the letters appearing in the correspondence columns of The Times, The Sunday Times, The Malta Independent and The Malta Independent on Sunday had the same theme – ‘I am Nationalist but given the wrong-doings of this government, I am going to vote Labour’ – and practically the same wording. I noticed, too, that some of them appeared to be attributed to false names. I wrote an article called ‘The elves in Sant’s grotto’, about how the leader of the opposition had a grotto of elves – what else, it was around Christmas time or just afterwards – beavering away producing letters to the editor rather than toys. Overnight, the word took on new meaning as ‘an otherwise invisible party person writing letters to the editor or posting partisan comments on line’ and entered the language. It became entrenched when one of those elves, a university student, round-robin emailed some other elves with a ‘she thinks she’s uncovered us’ kind of message and mistakenly included my editor in his address-line, possibly because one of the elves had a similar name. And so, of course, I got to see the email and to write about it.]

At the risk of rubbing your nose in it – I can’t resist – we have the genes for good looks AND brains, and some of us have the genes for creativity as well. Aren’t we lucky? Oh, and lots of us are tall, too. Isn’t life unfair? And no, I don’t ‘pretend 2 b’ Catholic (literal translation of ‘tippretendi’, I imagine, like those thick-heads who write the Maltastar stories). In fact, had you ever read the many things I have written about the subject, you would know my precise views on the subject of religion. But then, I imagine you can’t read anything that isn’t written in SMS-ese. Do I detect an undertow of southern Mediterranean misogyny here? Ugly witch? Velenu f-ilsien in-nisa? I wouldn’t care to be mocked “dear” Daphne, and to be called names, that is what to expect when coming face to face with non ” elves” bloggers of this site. Burning the Times by unruly individuals is not something nice to remember, but not even the murder of an innocent girl by some graduand.
To insert references to sacred names in this site is irreverent.
Why not compare people to any historical person, or is history such a difficult subject to remember?
Finally does one need to have been to the University to understand a comparison, Amanda? It is the comparison that ought to have been avoided.
Comparisons with animals in this site are now being replaced by comparisons with sacred names. What a drift!
A few days ago I used a false humoristic name “Lucy Fair” and nobody noticed until I drew my self the attention of a contributor. I had expected to be the subject of who knows how many comments. I invited such comments since they would have been directed to the name Lucy Fair that by itself deserved any insult.
