I agree with most of Daphne’s article, but one thing that I cannot understand is why just before the election, our ever so handsome (at least on the billboards) Prime Minister wrote to each and every yard worker promising them a secure job with a bright future.

D Fenech: Here’s another point. If it’s a waste of money to offer severance pay, why isn’t it a waste of money to ‘guarantee employment’. “Choosing workers”, as you put it, is not cost free. Why would or should anyone want to invest time, money and expertise to cut costs for the Drydocks’ current owner?

D Fenech: The public service is inefficient because it is run as a social service rather than as a public service. “Giving” people jobs is no such thing. What you’re talking about is adding people to a payroll that is already inefficiently overburdened and not necessarily productive. What you’re really talking about is guaranteeing an income for people laid off from the Drydocks. Isn’t that the purpose served by severance pay?
