@ John Schembri – Granted, but the shows you mentioned are broad satire. I was thinking more of the intimate kind of stand-up; a comedian, a microphone and religious, social and political sacred cows as the butt of her/his jokes…

A culture of stand up comedy in Malta is in the form of Bla Kommixin , Bla Kondixin, Zoo’s shows , and the Christmas pantomimes. Oh and we must not forget Teletubi.

If I were Joseph Muscat, I would emigrate to a suitable obscure and uninhabitable corner of the world and try to blend in with whatever fauna may be present there!

Thanks to Ray Azzopardi and his company of ‘merry’ ehm persons at Marsa, we have the new Pepsi Generation in Malta… Quality, style, dignity, manners or education are no longer important!

Just ask most schoolchildren in public schools: When they grow up they want to become a per-son-a-li-ta’!

And Joseph has somehow managed to become thus!

Reading about comedy shows, something cropped up in my mind. A number of years ago, on a Saturday-night show on TVM, there was a comedy troupe and one of the female actors used to play the part of a journalist. I was still young at the time to guess who she was mimicking, but looking back I think it was DCG. Can anyone confirm please?

(Daphne – Probably. And, almost certainly, the actress playing me would have spoken in a mixture of Maltese and English with an odd accent, under the mistaken impression that this is how tal-pepe people speak, when really it’s how village people who move to Sliema speak. But they wouldn’t know the difference. How sad.)

It’s such a shame we don’t have a culture of stand-up comedy here in Malta… Our politicians can provide so much material. On last week’s American comedy show Saturday Night Live, top comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler produced a wonderful sketch lampooning Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton. It’s one of the funniest things I’ve seen in ages. I’m afraid I’m not technologically savvy enough to post a link, but a quick google search should find it.
