Al Pacino’s first starring role was in 1971’s ‘Panic in Needle Park’ followed immediately by ‘The Godfather’, which shot him to fame. Midnight Cowboy was released in 1969.

Elvis Presley had certainly not left the building; in 1969 he was performing to sell out audiences due to his comeback concerts, he also had 4 top ten hits that year. And he died in 1977. Although his acting was crappy, I must admit .

I don’t think that Al Pacino was unknown when that film was made. Then again, I can’t imagine Ratso Rizzo being played by anyone other than Dustin Hoffman. As for Elvis, he would have surely left the building by then. Hoffman and John Voight made this film the classic that it became, together, of course, with that title tune.

Written by Fred Neil, who had the most incredible deep voice. An all time fav of mine. He dropped out of the music business and opened some sort of dolphin rescue/study NGO in Florida. If you have a chance some day, listen to his version. He passed on some years ago. Brilliant singer-songwriter.
