I was contented and surprised in the same time as I read this blog starting with a quotation from the Apocalypse. A book that always intrigued me. I felt privileged to lay my hands on the first edition of a 4CD pack related to the Apocalypse beautifully presented with nearly 10 hours of interviews to more than 44 academicians, each expert in his own field. It’s in French with English subtitles. Brilliantly executed by the now famous French journalists Gerard Mordillot & Jerome Prieure.

I simply don’t believe there are people who really mean harm to illegal immigrants; in an otherwise serene, secure and confident way of life, illegal migration dramatically challenged all this. It is indeed sad, very sad that this could have been controlled in the beginning. The historical phenomenon of ‘globalized’ illegal migration is hitting all countries, America, mainly southern Europe, Russia, and the Far East. ‘The displacement of masses, because of poverty, wars or simply looking for a better future, is a phenomenon here to stay’ says Jacques Attali, in his “Une breve histoire de l’avenir”
It’s felt more acute here I believe because deep inside an illegal emigrant is perceived as he who is robbing our space and in a ‘legal’ way, he is. Personally I feel there are no long term solutions other than tackling the issue on day to day basis as matters evolve.

A word of encouragement to our government, because I think it must have on its mind our ‘security’ in its foreign policy, in a scenario of an explosive situation in the Middle East. No ‘clash of civilizations’? Humbug! The illegal migration issue is a problem, no one ever wanted, especially now in the present recession menacing our islands. With whom can our government deal? …Governments are non-existent in North Africa. Israel is the only democracy created in post war two, the rest puppy regimes and monarchies.

I agree that a constant pressure is to be applied on our government to give this issue priority. ‘A little evil grows bigger if left unattended’. That ‘little’ is bound to grow. However the kind of ‘aggressive’ writings on this subject simply aren’t going to help anyone, either.

Antoine, comments on The Times are in fact moderated. I recently posted a comment in reply to lgalea telling him that I find his words disgusting and that he is a racist. Funnily enough my comment was accepted and also edited in a fashion that I didn’t recognise anymore. The moderator of The Times seems to be worse than all the people commenting. To me The Times is losing its credibility by allowing such racist comments.

I refuse to believe that there are real people out there who actually think so rabidly and abjectly. No, they’re just Lil’elves putting their two cents’ worth to try to get back at the government. Nobody could be so crass.

The principle of free speech means that everyone can express their opinion, no matter how outrageous in style or content, but surely some of the more offensive comments should be moderated and/or challenged by the site administrators. Louise Vella, for example, sees a black African collecting garbage and her first (and only) thought is that he is endangering our social cohesion, bringing down standards, etc. Some of the posts can be interpreted as inciting hatred and hostility towards Africans and The Times editorial board seem unaware that they are legally responsible for what they publish on their website.
