Mario Vella refers to “rabid witch-hunt” and “orchestrated smear campaign” against FAA. The issue is not so much FAA individuals but the means these individuals adopt to reach their goal. Most of the campaigns that FAA embark on involve misinformation to varying degrees and the St. John’s museum is no exception. Even in trying to defend, FAA they repeat the same lies – see today’s The Malta Independent. In many cases, they seem to have a personal grudge against someone – it is FAA which in many instances embarks on an orchestrated witch-hunt. It’s probably not Astrid Vella or Miriam Cremona who bears this grudge, but someone else who pulls the strings and drafts the press releases and letters to the editor, all spiced with venom. What happened in the St. John’s case is not new.

Other NGOs are light years ahead of FAA in terms of their approach to environmental issues. For example, even if one does not necessarily agree with the positions taken by Din L-Art Helwa, they command the greatest respect, because they adopt a stance based on a reasoned analysis of facts and information.

Well, what strikes me in that debate is how uncomfortable the PN really feels with its one seat majority. What government MPs are saying in the debate is, essentially, U ejja, please, halluna niggvernaw, u ejja ha!

Daphne, I was struck by the following “analysis” by Dr Mario Vella: “We are, traditionally, a people whose tolerance for the arrogance of the powerful is incredibly high. We grumble, clench our fists and chew our innards but, ultimately, we bite our tongue, bow our head and kiss the hand that beats us.”

He must have had 1971 – 1987 in mind, the years when he was a leading personality in the Malta Labour Party. He surely bit his tongue, bowed his head and actually kissed the hand that beat him. Or was he one of the Mintoffian clique, reigning supreme? Min irid jikteb, ukoll, fuq lehen il-poplu u d-demokrazija! He never thought of resigning from the Labour Party when the people were suffering. What did he do then to defend the people? But he expects the foundation council members to resign for the excellent work they have been doing at St John’s.

[Daphne – Oh, I wouldn’t bother. It’s not like anyone whose opinion counts takes that man seriously. He’s been washed up for years.]

Oh look! Astrid Vella is the Labour Party’s new heroine, and Mario Vella’s waters have broken all over her.

I have no doubt as to who the real bullies are in this on-going farce. And I don’t expect somebody like Mario Vella – God rest his political soul – to understand that real arrogance means taking it upon yourself to decide which projects should or should not be allowed to proceed to environmental impact assessment stage, when you are not the Malta Environment and Planning Authority.
