Don’t forget that our electoral system allows for non-party voters to vote as well, down the line, for candidates of a party they have little sympathy for. Non-party voters can influence which candidates of that party are elected. They can vote for the least obnoxious amongst them.

In Malta the voters make up the party, because voters vote for the candidate. In other countries they have lists. Top of the list is assured to become MEP if the party gets one seat, and so it goes down the line, district by district. This has ensured that more party cronies get to the top of the list. The Maltese and Irish systems are much more democratic.

I don’t know what you mean by Labour having “seen the light on the EU”. Is this another way of saying “pro-EU”? For starters, it was ‘pro’ or ‘anti-membership’. The pro and anti mindset should be dead by now, and yet it lives within us in the form of a zombie. So what light is it? That the majority said Yes to membership? You need to update the PC inside your skulls, people. It’s version 0.9 today – that’s at least six upgrades behind time.

And you don’t realise, eros, that once Malta joined the EU we all became EU citizens, including those who voted No?

Don’t you realise that this is our parliament at a federal level and those who voted ‘No’ have a right to be represented if their numbers suffice, and that they also have a right to participate in the shaping of the future EU?

Don’t you realise that Malta pays 5 million euro monthly to the EU budget and that roughly half of that money comes from those who are not as starry eyed as you.

Have you any idea of how democracy works at a federal level? Do you know why the EU is not yet a federal state and which EU insitutions operate in a federal way?
