Whispering campaigns are notoriously effective at undermining all other attempts to sell a political idea or candidate. Perhaps you should lay some blame at that particular PL door.

True, Lorna, but I would blame Dr Fenech Adami. He should never have asked ‘the people’ to decide, or at least he should have made it clear that it was not a real referendum: there should never have been a No side and no one should have been allowed to campaign for the ‘No’.

But all in all, this was a great victory for the Maltese Europhiles. They will have six seats in the EP. And our tough representatives can continue playing the Yes games that are played in that arena, including the Yes-for-pocketing-delegation-funds game and other spare-change games. ‘The people’ won’t even notice as they chew on sugared carrots; and deafened as they are by whispering loudhailers, they would mistake a whistle for a hiss and run the blower down like a snake. Not even Salvu Balzam, the great defender of humanity, is able to want to see through the charade. And Daphne? Well, we all know she is a focused person and that easily translates to narrow-mindedness. She will never sniff the penny in the left hand as the right hand holds her ‘EU passport’ before her squinting eyes.

That’s a little grandiose, don’t you think? What you really mean is that MEPs may address the European Parliament in Maltese. It’s funny, though, that no one who complains about how taxes are spent ever complains about this particular waste of tax money.
