I get royally irked when very sweet and popular priests get to speak in public fora on Islam they spew out bigotry and prejudice that shows little respect to history and the effects of politics. They are feeding the local trolls and justifying their simple mindedness.

Muslims in third world countries suffer as much and more than their christian counterparts because they live in failed totalitarian states where staying in power means creating divisions and hatred amongst the governed.

Courage is the ladder on which all the other virtues mount.
Daphne why don't you pluck up courage and go discuss this with Colonel Gaddafi and plead with him instead of with us. It is not our problem. That lady was correct.

Excellant article, and thank you, Daphne, for all the work you must have put into this site over the last year, each and every one of your articles and also all your comments were brilliantly constructed, even though I disagreed with your opinions about 3% of the time.

I was horrified when I read about the treatment of immigrants in Libya. Though I have a lot of misgivings about illegal immigrants, I do not want to be a party to such treatment. I am sure most Maltese will be the same if correctly informed. Some fair solution has to be found to our problem. A solution fair to the immigrants and Malta.

I would like to wish you. Daphne, and your readers a Happy New Year. Although I, of course, do not agree with all you write (but mostly I do) I had tremendous satisfaction reading all and I appreciate and enjoy your humour. Thanks.

In reply to <a href="https://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/2009/12/the-alternative-to-civilised-behaviour/#comment-36205">Stephen Farrugia</a>.

That has nothing to do with it! The question is that at the end of the day, due to the convenient agreement which was made between Italy and Libya, the Libyans are doing the "dirty" work which can't be done in Europe.

I saw an amateur documentary in a conference which I attended in Spain a few weeks ago, which showed (through secret filmings) the appalling situations migrants have in Libya. Their 'shelter' is nothing more than a warehouse in the middle of a desert. When their families finally send them money to get them out of there, they sell themselves to the police who are supposed 1. to protect them and 2. prevent them from making voyages to Europe. This situation is atrocious and counter-productive as only the (corrupt) Libyan institutions are gaining.

As I assume you are one of those people against people migrating from Africa to Malta (i.e. diplomatically xenophobic), this current situation is not to your advantage either as people will still be trafficked (or as you probably say "jinvadu") towards southern European territories..... Just open your mind!

All this, whilst the Libyan leader is head of the African Union and advocates a 'United States of Africa'.
It makes one weep for that continent. First exploited by the Europeans and Americans and then by their own special breed of dictators (usually sponsored by the Europeans or Americans - e.g Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Sudan, etc.)

''That’s not how I see it. People who are prevented from coming to our country by means of torture and other abuse should weigh heavily on our conscience'' you mentioned, dear Daphne.
Daphne. Excellent, thought-provoking article. Happy to see you're back up with your blog. A little off topic, however I just wanted to thank you for the last year. You have provided much amusement, entertainment and serious discussion. Many of us look forward to your future endeavours and comments in 2010. I wish you and yours a happy and prosperous New Year. BTW, how's your son getting along at LSE? I envy him.
