The Times today reports as follows: “The Commission for the Administration of Justice has amended the code of ethics for magistrates and judges barring them from becoming members of social network sites such as Facebook”

This appears to be a case of ‘forced ethics’ imposed on judges and magistrates.

Since this is a new amendment to the code of ethics, does this mean that the Honourable Magistrate will only have to observe the new code from this day on and that her past unworthy (to say the least) behaviour is all forgotten and forgiven?

If the previous code did not specify certain conducts on public media because it was written before the advent of social network sites, was it not up to the judgment of the magistrate to stay away from controversial situations?

Instead she ignored the risks, the possible public reaction and the dignity of her role in society.

Round one definitely goes to Daphne.

The judiciary have still not tackled the real problem. The issue is not the Facebook account – that is the symptom, not the illness. The Kummissjoni Amministrazzjoni tal-Gustizzja needs to tackle, and seriously, the ‘social life’ of judges and magistrates. The members have to be irreproachable. Keep at it, Daphne. First round to you but the endgame is still in play.
