Now I’m no judge or politician, but I’m ALWAYS careful what I post. This stuff stays around forever. Assume everything is public, and you can’t go wrong. Maybe judges and politicians need a course in social networking.

I’m awed by the fact that the world has become such a small place! The daily niggles of one street corner in Malta aren’t much different to what’s discussed on a street corner on the other side of the world. Through the internet these stories meet, fresh, for pervasive public consumption.

Pinch me! Maybe this will be the death knell of parochialism.

It is one thing for judges to say that there is nothing wrong with having Facebook friends from within the judiciary because they are not really friends in the true sense of the word – ie that the relationship goes no further, and there is no unethical behaviour which could compromise their status.

It is totally another for, as in ‘our’ case, magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera to have friends on Facebook from the judiciary, media, political figures, and parties to cases she was presiding over …. together with pictures of tremendous partying and socialising with them.

In that case, there can be no perceived impression that they were ‘just friends on Facebook’, but much more.

That is where Scerri Herrera put her foot in it. The fact that she is no longer on Facebook means nothing. Her attitude and character will not change. Just because nobody can see her ‘praspar’ on Facebook, doesn’t mean they don’t exist anymore.
