I started working in 1977 with a tour operator and I remember us buying mineral water (when we managed to find it) and at a very expensive price to give to clients in a couple of particular hotels in Sliema, so that they were able to bathe, because in Sliema we used to have water cuts practically every day.

I used to keep a kit-bag with towel/soap/shampoo etc. and every evening, I would ‘phone round family and friends to see where I was going to shower, especially when the Union Club – my proxy bathroom – was closed.

Thank goodness we had 70s music to mitigate Socialism.
