Gaddafi seems to be a mentally unstable man. It's difficult to say this without intending it to be a superficial slur on a perceived enemy.

My biggest question lately is why Saif al Islam, who seems to have a working head on his shoulder placed his future in this mad man's hands. The older son of Kim Jong Il was sane enough to leave, al Assad seems to be a reluctant President.

Did his father offer him a bait and switch? Promise reforms so the prodigal son returns then dilly dally and waffle about whilst tempting and corrupting him with power?

I bet Saif is kicking himself every night to sleep for getting into this. Now there's only one way out: Saif has to offer his father as sacrifice to the people and maybe leave with his family never to be seen.

This would make a fine Greek tragedy.

a.k.a. Cat Stevens before he converted to Islam. A great singer/songwriter back in the day, but when he said he agreed with the 'fatwa' on that bloke Rushdie as what wrote 'The Satanic Verses' (though the book is pretty crappy), it put me off him a bit.

It did wake me up to what Islam is all about though . . .

It is horrific to see the 'ruler' (dictatotor) a country allowing his followers to shoot fellow citzens, burn soldiers who disobey orders and contract mercenaries to shoot-to-kill people who are only protesting against a tyrant who has deprived them of everything in the last 42 years.

But, some of this sounds familiar... What was the situation at Tal-Barrani and Rabat back in the eighties? Were not we going down the same route?

And, if my memory serves me well, who was that leader of a neighbouring country who was invited to Malta by (now a senile) our saviour when the English departed in 1979, clasping his hands and smirking in glee? Was it not the same tyrant we see today, to whom Malta was made a lapdog in those days? It now makes me blush even redder to remember that Malta licked his green heels so much. What is the world thinking about us at this time, when people rememer our country's past?

Some events sear our memory and present events are vindicating what we felt at that time.

It's a matter of priorities. Anyone sane would be concerned about the repercussions on Malta. However, the saner would realise that the repercussions of not doing anything are far worse than the status quo ante.

"A party spokesman said Labour “deeply regrets the loss of lives and condemns all form of violence. In particular, we are worried by the instability in the region and its repercussions on Malta. We hope common sense prevails.”

Can't these people get it right?
