Hasn't BP signed some oil deals with Gaddafi? So the UK stopped grovelling for oil? At least Cameron is putting on a brave face and giving this a nice spin…

I certainly don't want a pariah state festering down there. Say bye-bye to cruise liners in the Med for as long as Gaddafi stays in power antagonising Europe. This certainly needs to be resolved in terms of months. I hope the rebels are a viable alternative.

Pfft! In Frankie Boyle's words, he looks like he should be playing the f**king trombone in a f**king brass band.

The only politician who could ever have become a great prime minister was Robin Cook. But he's pushing up the daisies now.

A very compelling statement but...

There are two kinds of sins - those of commission and those of omission.

The sin of commission lies on Gaddafi's doorstep while the sins of omission lie squarely on various doorsteps including those of the UN, EU and NATO.

Cameron's statement is fine but is far short of any action which leads to the demise of the Gaddafi regime. So, however good his speech is, he is still party to those guilty of the sin of omission.

Comes a time when time simply runs out and as far as the Libyan protesters are concerned that threshold is aproaching within hours, not days or weeks. Weeks ago was the time to take a bold action and not engage in a series of talks, meetings and procrastinations. The blood of the slaughtered martyrs seeking basic freedoms we take so much for granted falls on those who falsely waited for things to sort themselves out among the two factions which divide Libya.

Unfortunately if nothing is done in a matter of hours, there will only be one faction left - that one headed by Gaddafi and even if in the end (and too late) Gaddafi goes, his allies will still be an embittered nation with a worse attitude towards the West than Gaddafi's.

China's attitude will not change because it is just as guilty of atrocities against humanity as Gaddafi, and probably much worse, so siding with the rest of the UN regarding the no-fly zone, automatically implies guilt for their past actions.

China today will only respond to restricting Chinese imports but that takes time to put in place, much too late for those fighting with clubs, stones and hunting rifles against a fully armed army equipped with the latest weaponry.
