They were practically the soundtrack of the Xandir Malta and the Rediffusion radio services of the time.

I remember particularly clearly a programme called “L-għażla tas-semmiegħa” which used to air at 8 every morning. Most of these songs would feature in every edition.

They remind me of when the church school I used to attend was closed by KMB, of the tension there was everywhere you went, of when my mum used to send me to the general store across the street to buy expired tinned corned beef because of the bulk buying system adopted by the Socialist government. I was seven or eight years old at the time.

It’s ironic that listening to them again, decades later, I am able to appreciate them musically, but they still bring back those memories.
