Would she have had the spunk to call any one of the Golden Boys a “fucking wanker” to his face?

Put differently, would she still have a face if she called one of them a fucking wanker to his face?

We’re taking our post-1987 freedom “for granted”, I’m afraid.

That she used “fucking wanker” to a stranger (let’s face it, on a personal level Austin Gatt is a stranger to her) doesn’t say very nice things about her and her upbringing, does it?

Without getting too much into the merits of this particular case, I think that “wanker” was not the correct term to use. It was actually used in reverse. Someone who is boorish or clumsy would be referred to as a “fuc*in’ bastard” (UK) or motherfuc*er” (US). For example, if someone in a restaurant clumsily knocks a plate of soup out of the waiter’s hand, that person is a fuckin’ bastard. The wanker is the person on whom the soup lands.

Even now, 25 years later, a Sicilian taxi-driver – making conversation when stuck in traffic – brought up the subject of how the sight of Maltese people “raiding” the purposely-put-up stalls at Catania, laden with toothpaste, pasta and chocolate ‘per i Maltesi’ remains with him to this day.

And then come the Labour fools, prior to our joining the EU, “worrying” that Sicilian hairdressers would hop over to Malta to take “our” jobs! If anything, joining the EU has opened up several windows of opportunities for people like Nicola” (with-an-accent) Abela Garret.

More than 16 years, Anthony. They ruined the education system for the 40-something generation. They made us think – as children – that it was normal to live in fear of the police, to have our homes ransacked by the police, to expect to be beaten up by the police when attending protest demos.

They made us think it was normal to have our water and electricity supply cut off, especially on Christmas Day; they made us think it was normal to be treated like criminals for not declaring anything when returning from an overseas holiday on a 233 Euro-equivalent budget.

They made us think it was normal to expect Labour thugs to roam about attacking people, especially in Sliema.

Yes, they fucked an entire country for a full sixteen years, but the effects have been much longer-lasting than that. It was so bad, so scarring, that we’re still talking about it today. I still get a panic attack at the sight of a sea of Labour flags … even if it is only on a YouTube video.
