@ Reuben Scicluna: for a fifty year old , I thought I knew quite a lot about Maltese politics and politicians. But it was only after the last elections that I came to know about the private lives and the goings-on of certain politicians, thanks to this Running Commentary mostly.

Up to some months ago I did not know who Manuel Delia was and up to a month ago I thought Hermann Schiavone was out of politics until I had a ‘home visit’ by him.

People, especially young people, will ask simple basic questions, and make simplistic judgments which make us bang our head against a wall:

“What should I do to vote?” , “Do they pay me?”, “I think I will vote for that doctor who cured my fever”, “ Reno seems to be a decent bloke and even “Il-Guy” , “Franco looks intelligent , but a bit ambitious”. “Will I have the €4.66 increase per week in my student stipend?”

Even though it’s a done deal, they’re just desperate to get in there.

[Daphne – Yes, of course. Practically every new voter who wasn’t raised in a fierce Labour household, I would say for a start. At 18 I couldn’t have told you the names or recognised the faces of any members of the Opposition except those who were familiar to me because they lived in Sliema, were known to my parents, or had children I knew. And even with the government, I only knew the ministers and certainly not the backbenchers, except for spurious reasons like having a mother-in-law who lived a few doors away from me, as with Johnny Dalli (tal-Labour). ]
