I know as this year I have read an excellent book on Italy and the Risorgimento – The Pursuit of Italy by David Gilmour which as it describes on the dust cover is A History of a Land, its Regions and their People. However, I prefer my version.

Actually the camicie rosse were the cheapest shirts Garibaldi could afford. It was red, and usually it was used by butchers to cover up splashes. The reason you mentioned was a ‘happy’ coincidence.

The Mille expedition is over-romanced and hyped – like all things Italian. To be frank, it was a terribly ramshackle affair.

They wore red shirts so that the blood did not show when they are wounded and brown trousers when they are in full flight escaping away from the fighting.
