‘Biografiji’ has the infamous “studjuz”. A catch-all if ever there was one. Xarabank has “Doktor” (pronounced and understood the Maltese way). Higher up the rarefied heights of Maltese small-town idiocy lies “President Emeritus”.

The over-used ‘top criminal lawyer’ to describe Dr. Debono has perplexed me for some time now. The cases he defends, which are frequently reported in The Times, absolutely belie that grandiose title.

I imagine he coined the phrase himself, just as he did with ‘(very) high achiever’. The man’s conceit appears to be boundless.
