No – a ‘sack race’ is totally different.

The more audacious would race with a chicken egg on a spoon and there was no ‘cheating’ once you drop the egg. A potato can always be picked up again, undamaged and the competitor is able continue with the race.

What struck me most was that there was no mention of any cock-fights. So that means that a very important and popular personality will probably not bother to attend.

These help in promoting our different villages which of course is something commendable and should be encouraged.

Unfortunately it also brings some envy in me for I keep on asking myself what fiera we can have to promote Sliema.

It won’t be nice showing our dirty streets, or the state of our pavements.

We could of course hold an exhibition of old tower cranes, which I am sure would attract collectors from abroad, but this would not be possible to hold in just one weekend owing to the large quantity we have.

After giving this a lot of consideration, I come to the conclusion that the only thing we have in abundance is what we have always been famous for, thus I suggest that we hold a Fiera tal-Igsma.

This Fiera should be under the auspices of the Minister of Rural affairs, for obvious reasons.
