In reply to <a href="https://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/2012/06/what-a-bloody-scandal/#comment-290176">A Montebello</a>.

Way back in the 90s, in my Sixth Form days, I used to hang around a bar whose owner was quite notorious for being a thug. The cleaner there was a black man, who one day probably having reached the end of his tether from the humiliating treatment the bar owner used to dish out, stopped me to explain that he had a PhD. I felt so sad for him.

Fast forward a decade and I emigrated myself. Although I found decently-paid jobs, I did contract work for five years to avoid doing work that was lesser paying or 'beneath' me.

At the end of those five years I tired of my adventure and came back home, convinced the grass isn't greener. Some professions like IT and medicine are international, whilst some others are territorial and require local knowledge.

The point is, I had the option of coming back home. My dignity would not allow me to keep on living a life of unstability just for the cool factor of living in London. I was reluctant to come back at first as I did not want to end up in some lame, underpaid civil service job.

Luckily, I found a changed Malta and am now working for a British firm.

I had the right to emigrate legally and came back to an improved country. The illegals landing here do not have either the luxury of emigrating legally or returning home to totalitarian states. They have no choice but to accept menial work.

Whilst I did not have to deal with racism, they do. Living away from your country is fraught with difficulties and not for the faint-hearted.

Unfortunately for the migrants the average Maltese counry bumpkin will treat them as slaves, having no rights and dignity. Of all the countries to end up in, I wouldn't choose Malta if I were black.

Eventually I do foresee Malta becoming multicultural. However, the current crop of migrants are the pioneers who have to bear the brunt of Maltese prejudice and ignorance.

.

This case raises once again an issue about the human rights of migrants.

I am not expecting the Partit Laburista to say anything now - individual human rights are not important for the Partit Laburista - but probably they will use the results of any enquiry to criticise the government.

A proper investigation is necessary, and whoever is found responsible should face justice.

.... we wait for the cover-up with bated breath!

(Last night I spoke to a guy from Ghana who was working on the beach - menial work that no Maltese man in his early 20's would dream of doing of course - there was music playing and "Le Freak" came on and his face lit up. He said it reminded him of home and the fun he would have with his large family and friends before the trouble started. His brother is the only surviving family member he has left. And off he went to carry another 5 deck-chairs in the sweltering heat).
