“Callus who was a teacher was also a mother of seven”

Was she a football player? I remember a nun at school telling me off for referring to a fellow student with just her surname. Boy was I told off about that, ” only football players are referred to by their surname, especially NOT a woman!”

So she was primarily a teacher and happened to be a mother of seven? It just doesn’t sound right.

Pawla Callus passed away at St Vincent de Paule on Sunday afternoon and in 10 days’ time she would have celebrated her 94th birthday.

How about “Pawla Callus passed away at St Vincent de Paule on Sunday afternoon, 10 days short of her 94th birthday”?

I’m sure you know this isn’t only exclusive to LP people though. When will we ever have competant English readers and writers in the public services?
