Read the Times article. The clip was from a TV debate on the 28th of February, 2008. Exactly one week prior to Dr. Sant producing the contract live, in the final TV debate on the 6th of March.

My guess is that it is (was) a combination of self-pride and stupidity. If it’s cunning and ambition (I still am skeptical of smart), then all four traits may co-exist in our can’t-wait-to-be and almost Prime Minister.
