I live in London and have been for the past 5 years (holidays in Malta don’t really give you a feel of the day to day). Reading the Times of Malta, it seems to me that the political scene has turned into a soap opera rather than a house of elected representatives moving the country forward.

Apart from my shock at reading the comments on how people have reacted to Mintoff’s death (some people are even portraying him as a divine figure!), is anyone actually running the country or giving it some form of direction?

It seems to me that there is more ‘fire fighting’ than governing going on – and the opposition is just sitting on the sidelines hoping to pick up the peaces without actually winning by merit!

I do hope my impressions are wrong – it would be a pity to throw away the last 25 years of progress.

At the outset, the so called “kundanna” is no more than a rebuke. It is an expression of opinion and adverse as it may be, it is not a decision which deprives him of any social or economic right or interest. The courts cannot review or enter into the merits of the validity of an opinion, given informally or otherwise. Those who in collegium issued the rebuke merely exercised their right of freedom of expression and at law they are clearly entitled to rebuke him, as any other person may rebuke another. Their decision to issue the rebuke within the structures of a non-governmental organisation is not a decision which comes under the umbrella of the law. The expression of a personal rebuke may give rise to a libel action in certain cases but to classify it as a “decision” is simply wrong.

The case of Dr. Albert Ganado’s expulsion from the PN in 1958 was a decision which terminated Ganado’s membership. It is a completely different matter. If Debono is ever facing expulsion then and only then will the principles of natural justice come into play.

You are wrong here Daphne. They don’t think such traits are normal. They consider them to be assets.

Look at how they’re dealing with Mintoff’s death.
