Some months after Labour’s victory back in 1971, a housewife was complaining to others, near a vegetable street vendor, that she was being badly hit by the regime and she was therefore rueing her giving them her vote.

The vendor, rather tongue-in-cheek, asked her why she had done that to start with. “Biex nippruvah” was the naive reply. “Mela dak xi ricipettu, Sinjura?” the man retorted, to the mirth of all the by-standers.

As you rightly said “il-partit Laburista mhux xi ristorant, ha tmur biex tippruvah”.
