He went there wearing the hat of the person who is legally responsible for the place in relation to which the report was filed. Since the context was not one in which the police are bound to take action even without a report being filed, I _think_ Toni Abela was within his rights in clarifying the matter and asking for no steps to be taken.

It has been hijacked by a group of questionable people with dismal track record who thinks that they don’t need to work within the parameters of the law.

Unbelievable, Toni Abela, a lawyer to boot, doesn’t think this is a criminal case. A deputy leader of a political party going to the police to tell them not to press charges on someone is what I call police interfering.

A stupid judgement and shows his supreme arrogance. They are doing this while in Opposition, can you image what these people would do once in government.

In the interest of fairness, Joseph Muscat must sack him today.

Very eerie to me. Totally dangerous. Has any firm public statement been issued by the Police to reconfirm their supposed neutral stance? This is a very serious matter. Or are we already back to days of old where the Police can’t be trusted?

If the Police can’t be trusted to take proper neutral action, if the Unions defend their actions, if the Labour press back the Unions as stipulated by Tony Zarb, if the rest of the mainstream press remain inert, this promises to be a walkover for anything that Labour want.

And if they don’t want, well: Manwel will find a way out in defence of any Labour crime. Press reports will back him. Full support of Labour. Full support of Unions. Full support of Police? Gagging of public comment by psychological exertion. Less crimes reported. etc

As to the point re filming of interviews by Police. I’m sure a different name would be found for what does not constitute an interview, and therefore does not require filming.

Police need to issue a public statement loud and clear, with a back-up measure in place. Back-up measure should at this point include fully independent EU/ Human Rights link, just in case particular cases are then seen before particular Magistrates. With more years lost for targeted particular individuals in between. Whilst their business interests are snatched from them. etc.

This needs to be in place now. Embassies please take note.
