Let’s face it, the way the PN has imploded following this electoral trashing shows that the situation within the party was more volatile than one might have reckoned and the start of the ‘fuggi fuggi’, albeit honorable under the circumstances, does leave a sour taste in the mouth of those that were willing to give PN yet another go.

‘Da dire al fare c’e di mezzo il mare’ the Italians so wisely say and that is the huge task PL has to face especially now that the support at the polls was so unexpectedly overwhelming.

You were right trying to convince friends to stick with what you believe in, because objectively, you were looking at the ‘bigger picture’ which arguably those that swung their vote to Labour did not.

Ah the bigger picture! Mind you, I was outrageously pissed off myself at the many outstanding gaffes performed by Dr Gonzi & Co during the last legislature. The ‘honoraria’ issue stands out most and I feel was the most unforgiven of the lot.

Pointless mentioning the remaining cock-ups but rest assured and mark my words that then the undecided took the plunge – it was these mishaps that determined whether the pencil would tick the blue or red boxes.

The bigger picture contained three main ingredients which should have (but did not have) at least spared PN from last weekends whitewash: a) Malta having weathered the storm that brewed up in 2008 and that has brought mightly economies to their knees, b) the handling of the Libyan conflict, and c) obtaining Euro 1 billion plus in funds which were only made available because of Malta’s excellent track record in the usage of EU funds and our finances.

These three issues that kept us afloat, that made us proud to have help an oppressed people and that was fruit of efficient financials were confronted with the hiccups mentioned earlier and the latter were deemed unforgiveable.
