Actually, the proper way would be to say that HH The Pope received NN at a private audience. This is the traditional way and it is meant to imply that the Pontiff (as a monarch) receives someone and listens to what they have to say or supplicate. There is no real parity in status (as one would normally infer when one is engaged in a meeting) and, in theory, the Pope may listen without indulging in any discussion or exchange of views with one who is (notionally) inferior in status. The use of the word “audience” is this context not restricted to the Holy See.
