And because I tied a safety line to the swim zone at the Blue Lagoon in Comino while I took my 2 year old daughter to land as she was sea sick, I was told with a smile “We’ll see you in court, Mr. Galea”.

And I was anchored – I just thought that for some extra safety I’d tie a safety line for 10 minutes.

Age discrimination kicks in much earlier than 50. I’d say around the time you hit 37/38 it gets difficult to find a job, by 40 you’re considered over qualified. The public sector rarely has vacancies for mature candidates. I am up to my neck in qualifications and experience both local and international. I am working on my cpd by doing a short industry course where I am lectured by inexperienced personnel from the public sector who frankly admit to not knowing much about the industry.

The private sector offers mostly temporary jobs where you walk into a mess, straighten things out and once up and running you are sent packing to be replaced by a fresh graduate who with the right structures you would have put in place is much cheaper labour.

In the mean time I get repeatedly turned down for jobs I could do in my sleep because I would supposedly get bored and leave for better prospects and pay except there are no better prospects than the dole.

You are not alone in your plight. Former company secretaries are in the same predicament and have been reportedly turned down for shelf stacking jobs at Tesco’s. In case you were thinking this is some phenomenon unique to Malta.
