So this is all about racism, isn’t it? These poor, miserable people running away from utter oppression and clutching to dear life on the first rock they bump into. Just like a runaway who seeks shelter in the nearest house he comes across. Naturally, the tenants give him sanctuary and take care of him until he is able to move on to a better, safer place where he can start a new life. I’m sure this “nearest house” isn’t expected to be the permanent lodging of all the runaways who happen to seek asylum. Is this “nearest house” racist because the runaway happens to be black or purple? Will this unfortunate be denied the right to move on to better pastures?

No, this is NOT about hatred. This issue is about taking care of people, especially harassed people, lovingly, adequately and permanently. In Malta there are racists just like in any other part of the world, but this handful of decadents has never stopped us from being generous and hospitable, in our own small way.

So don’t you dare turn these (admittingly) hasty, haphazard government statements into a holocaust. Maybe the people in question ought to have expressed themselves better but comparing them to ruthless racists isn’t even an option.

Despite it backfiring he is instilling so much hatred. If Muscat is so committed to addressing the problem of illegal immigration, migrants that arrive by sea are the least of the problem.

Despite popular belief the largest number of irregular or illegal migration are those who enter with proper documentation but then choose to stay on past the expiration of their visa.

There is so much misplaced discourse that most people don’t know this, but the PM should know better.

All this aside, his behaviour has been utterly disgusting and reprehensible, he has shown a complete disregard for fundamental human rights and the welfare of the migrants who risked life and limb to get here. Shameful.

There’s a fine line between mocking them and parroting them yourself. Personally I think in this current delicate situation such things as Demicoli’s are best left unsaid.

It is only the few (maybe a third of the Maltese) that do not feel threatened by these illegal immigrants. If Malta was not an island it will still be the same sentiment.

Who is going to reassure the Maltese that there is no threat? That these are human beings? That these people come here ‘ta fuqhom senduqhom’ and have to start living a free life from the beginning? As things stand even the sight of them is seen as a threat. Why should it be so?
