[Daphne - How would you suggest that Brussels acts, Chris?]

A fair and properly implemented burden sharing agreement would be a start. Every boat load of illegal immigrants could be shared with all the EU members according to size and population or something of that sort.

Everyone had to share the burden when Greece's economy went tits up. (Again I do not know all the facts but i'm sure you get what I am saying).

[Daphne - I somehow didn't think you would. You have scant understanding of the thinking that underpins law. You can never deport a citizen from his own country, for whatever reason.]

I know that. In fact I wrote "if there had to be some legal way". Unfortunately we are stuck with these (Maltese rapists/murderers/pedophiles/domestic abusers) people.

Ok thanks for the correction. I'll stop speculating on ways to get them to Europe (from Malta) but I'm sure there must be some legal way to do so.

[Daphne - You see, the hole in your thinking, Chris, is that you haven't yet understood that Malta IS Europe. We ARE the European Union. We don't GET THEM TO Europe, because THEY are in Europe already by dint of being in Malta. The EU is not 'the other'. It is us, Malta.]

Surely by doing that (if possible) it would be respecting their human rights, giving them what they really want (Mainland Europe), solving Malta's problem of having too many illegal immigrants and would put pressure on Brussels to act upon this issue seriously.

[Daphne - How would you suggest that Brussels acts, Chris?]

You mentioned Maltese problem people (rednecks etc.) in another reply. Although that is a different subject all together I would have no problem what so ever if there had to be some legal way of deporting all the MALTESE wife beaters, rapists, pedophiles, murderers etc.

[Daphne - I somehow didn't think you would. You have scant understanding of the thinking that underpins law. You can never deport a citizen from his own country, for whatever reason.]

I'm not a lawyer and obviously I stand to be corrected but I can't see how issuing a passport to an immigrant who has had his application for asylum accepted would be illegal.

[Daphne - Asylum gives you refugee status, not citizen status. Refugees keep their own original passports. Passports convey citizenship, or rather, the other way round.]

I know of many immigrants who have had their applications accepted and who freely travel, even outside of Europe for holidays and what not. Surely they would need a passport to do so.

[Daphne - Why do you leap to the assumption that their passport is Maltese? It isn't. I think you fail to understand that passports are not just passports. You don't 'give somebody a passport'. You first have to give him citizenship. A person can't have a Maltese passport without being a Maltese citizen.]

Muscat has proved himself to be a true fascist with his policies based on racist nationalism. Push back is in direct breach of human rights whether or not it was a bluff.

Saying that this episode was a bluff is probably a lie. No one in his or her right frame of mind needs to resort to such underhanded tactics or utterances to establish a point. This kind of rhetoric is usually uttered by bullies and terrorists. Such utterances are immoral even when stated as a joke.

The European Union rose directly out of a conflict that was based on fascism. All our grandparents (and many of our parents) suffered poverty, hunger and deprivation because of fascist attacks on our island, The George Cross on our flag is a living testament to that conflict.

If Muscat's true intention was to shake the EU into action because he perceived inaction, then he had several diplomatic channels to do so. That is the way of educated, civilised and intelligent governance. That is the way we were brought up (by the Jesuits, I might add).

No, Muscat's intention was not a macho game. He wanted to make a point and he was willing to bully vulnerable people to get across without regard to their health, their well-being and their lives.

This is clear in his statement that "anyone trying to stop the government’s position will also have to bear the cost."

NGOs, journalists, lawyers and average citizens should not be "punished" or "bear the cost" for speaking their mind. This is a second breach of human rights.

What is Muscat going to do? Will he "cleanse" the island from all those who are not in agreement with any position taken by the government? Is this the true meaning of "you can work with us"? What will he do when he has the list of people signing the various petitions against such actions? Will revenge be meted out?

Importantly is the absence of a backbone from among all the Labour MPs who grace our Parliament and who have graced it in the past 5 years. Why doesn't anyone speak out against the PM? Is paid pornography in hotels or divorce the more important issue? Or are these people in agreement?

Where are those ex-independent MPs? Do they stand with the Labour Party now? Or are they ready to speak out loud against injustices the way they spoke out in the true liberal environment under a Nationalist government? Where is Franco Debono now?

Where are those public switchers now? Why don't you take a public stand please? Daphne mentioned two yesterday. I know one of them. I disagree with the position he has taken but I also know him as a gentleman and as someone who, I believe, would be disgusted by this.

Recently Muscat said "you ain't seen nothing yet" or something to that effect. Yes, I am sure. Terrorism and fascism always take humanity by surprise.

One final thought about the episodes over the past few days: Muscat meets the Pope for a private chat. Muscat shows off trophy children and happy snappy pictures with the leader of the Catholic world. The Pope travels to Lampedusa and delivers a scathing criticism and a message of compassion. A day or two later Muscat delivers his fascist hate against the very same people.

If the EU are so against push backs / deportation may I suggest that the Maltese authorities issue the illegal immigrants with Maltese / EU passports and a ONE WAY ticket to Brussels ON the condition that they do NOT return to Malta.
