This is an abject lesson in the fact that once you let the genie out of the lamp, you have a long way ahead of you to stuff it back inside.

Sant opposed EU membership simply because he wanted to oppose everything the Nats did. This irrational hatred towards the EU is all his doing and the LP are finding it very hard to shake it off (assuming they want to in the first place).

It would be just like them to sit on the fence, sucking at the teats of mother Europe, but fomenting seething dissent just in case something happens and they need to say “we told you so”.
