So this Government issued and awarded a tender for a company to implement the law on the sale of passports without this law having been discussed, let alone approved, by Malta’s Parliament. Utter disregard to Parliament..and not less to Maltese Citizenship and to all it stands for.

This secrecy cannot be justified unless government feels that publication, as has been required up to now, could harm Malta’s or the applicant’s image.

What a can of worms…

Selling passports at less than the price of a luxury flat!? EUR 650,000 is a *lot* of money to most of us, but on the scale of a country’s finances it is just a blip, even for this rock.

Some questions any journalist worth his press card should ask…

Can the Maltese citizenship be revoked once given out?

If it is revoked, will the citizenship of the dependents be revoked automatically as well?

Who will have access to the list of these new citizens?

If the new citizens will be allowed to vote, their name will appear on the Electoral Register surely?

Can the new citizens stand for election in the Maltese Parliament or hold government positions either as part of the government or on a consulting basis?

Has the impact on the price of high-end properties been evaluated and the cascading effect on the general property market?

Will the new citizens be required to have a private medical insurance for them and their dependents or does the EUR 650,000 include access to free public health care for life for the lot?

Will the new citizens and their dependents be eligible to free education up to University level?

Considering the two questions above, what is the net “profit” of the original EUR 650,000 say after 10-20 years that such a family group has been living in Malta?

Will there be due diligence on the provenance of the EUR 650,000?
