Couldn’t agree more with everything you’ve said. As regards living abroad, even the weird people here (it’s academia, there’s loads of them) are less weird than your average Maltese person.

I’d be a rich man if I had a penny for every time I heard a sanctimonious ‘Ahna ma jinteressawniex dawn l-affarijiet…rajtha x’kitbet Daphne?’, or ‘I don’t read Daphne. She’s such a…’, followed by a detailed expose of something Daphne has written.

And of course, it’s absolutely true that women in Malta live by a self-destructive code. I’ve lived abroad for some time and often think about the stark contrast between the bahaviour of women here and that of women in Malta.

Women in the country where I live (not Malta) do not spend their time pandering to male egos. They do not giggle at inappropriate behaviour and innuendo. It is generally accepted that a woman’s most important asset sits between her ears.

I am amazed at the number of people saying that this is not of any interest to them, many in a holier-than-thou tone of voice.

People who are otherwise quite happy to sit round the dinner table and talk about everyone they know and how they’re breaking up, pregnant outside of marriage, alcoholic etc.

And then something like this comes along and they’re scandalised because you’re blogging about it. What stupid hypocrites.

[Daphne – Oh, they’re not scandalised at all, Catherine. They think it’s fashionable to be scandalised and that what is expected of them is to express shock that I wrote about it, rather than shock that Pullicino Orlando did it.

However, I know for a fact – because I have been around for almost as long as Pullicino Orlando has and believe me when I say that it’s never been a sheltered life – that what they are really feeling is the latter and that when they have a trusted audience, like their sisters, mother, best friend, whatever, they’ll be going over every last detail. The women are the worst, of course – some women in Malta can’t stand to see any other woman be the subject of discussion or admiration.

It’s the southern Mediterranean mindset that affects every other area of life and work: they see it as competition for scarce resources, in this case, male attention of whatever variety. Men tend to be more honest about their interest in these matters, and interestingly, most of the members of my international worldwide network of spies are men, not women.

People tend to forget that at this end I can see the viewership stats for every post, and this one has literally gone through the roof, but curiously enough, the viewership stats for the Posh Photo Studio pictures are much higher still. As you yourself know and have often commented, this is Malta, where people are very unsophisticated, and part of their tragic lack of sophistication is pretending to be indifferent or having views on matters of taste which to the truly sophisticated are completely risible.

I notice very little change in the manner, mode and subject of discourse among many of my contemporaries, for example, between when we were 16 and now at 49. You’re talking 33 years in which there has been little or no change in their mentality or their vocabulary. I read anthropology for a while at university, and my abiding regret is that I never researched and wrote a paper on this fascinating topic. Lucky you, to be living elsewhere in these trying times, though.]
