Each time there’s a blaze in a building, reports come out blaming the infamous “short circuit”, while stating in the same paragraph that there’s a magisterial inquiry to establish the cause of the fire.

Electrical circuits are protected with circuit breakers which trip when the circuit is overloaded , let alone when there’s a short. These rarely fail.

On the other hand, loose connections, or dry joints can cause a fire easily, especially where there’s an accumulation of dust on the appliance.

Poor ventilation in cooling systems of appliances can be a cause of a blaze due to cooling fans being blocked and sometimes jammed with dust .

How to prevent such fires: keep ventilation grills of your appliances (e.g. computer tower clean use a vacuum cleaner)

Don’t put magazines on appliances which have cooling grids on their top.

Tighten the electrical connections of your installation and your appliances, especially when their plugs feel warm.

Don’t connect any heaters to multi-plugs or extensions.

Don’t cover an oil heater radiator.

Fan heaters, which normally are placed under the reception desk to keep the receptionist’s legs warm, tend to pick up dust which in turn accumulates on the heating element causing the heating element to overheat. Sometimes the fan jams with the dust.

Fluorescent lights which are flickering and glowing at the ends are a potential cause and the incorrect installation of low voltage halogen lamps on soffit ceilings.

The right conditions to have a blaze are a handyman who does not do any preventive maintenance, a housekeeper who does not clean systematically and personnel who leave equipment and appliances running while the office is closed.

Aren’t there any fire alarm systems in the Office of the Prime Minister? If there are, when were these last tested?
