Taken on its own, the implications of the sale of citizenship are far-reaching. With the EU parliament’s debate and vote (and the opinion expressed by Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the European Commission), the implications are massive and exponentially more significant than they were in December. Today’s headlines in the international press are proof of this.

Any serious newspaper would have analysed and expressed a view not only about the scheme but also about the vote and the stand taken by the PM. The Times of Malta chooses to ignore these in its editorial. By contrast, the Independent spoke about the issue five times in the last six days in its editorial.
